Hey fellow parent travelers! Just got back from an awesome Christmas trip to Kuala Lumpur with my crew, and I'm here to spill all the tea (or should I say teh tarik? πŸ˜‰) about navigating KL with little ones in tow.

Tips for New Arrivals:

  1. Do your immigration card before you land. You'll thank me later!
  2. Grab a SIM card at the airport - we went with Digicom (45RM for unlimited internet, total lifesaver)
  3. Download Grab app - it's like Uber and let's your order food too!
  4. My Google Map list: https://maps.app.goo.gl/bfsWEwdJdzkfTQpr8

Where We Called Home: Traders Hotel

First things first - let's talk about where we planted our family flag.

We picked Traders Hotel, it was centrally located, avoiding to taxi everywhere and walking instead is a huge plus, and I had discount booking via hotels.com ($130/night), and honestly? Total win!

The best part? That covered pool with views of the Petronas Towers, which meant even if it rained we knew how to keep the kids entertained.

What we loved:

Quick heads up: Check-in was a bit slow, but hey, that's what snacks and iPads are for, right?

We skipped the hotel breakfast buffet. Why? Well, our kids are those magical creatures who either eat nothing or want pancakes at 11 AM. Plus, it forced us to explore local breakfast spots, which turned out to be way more fun!

Day 1: The "We Just Got Here" Day

Let's be real - first days are always a bit wonky. We checked in around 5-6 PM and decided to brave Pavilion mall.

Plot twist: what should've been a 1km quick trip turned into a 60-minute adventure because... Christmas Day traffic! But hey, the kids napped in the car, so win-win?

We hit up Nanyang Cafe for some Hong Kong-style coffee and goodies.

Also, parent pro tip: find a 7-Eleven early in your trip. Nothing beats having snacks and water readily available when the kids declare they're "starving" for the 100th time!

Day 2: Zoo Day - Because Kids + Animals = Magic! 🦁

Since the sun was shining (a Christmas miracle), we decided to kick off our adventures at the National Zoo of Malaysia. Quick heads up - there are two lines at the entrance: one for locals and one for tourists. And yes, tourists pay more (sorry folks!).

Here's the money talk:

The zoo's actually pretty awesome and well-kept. Plan for 2-3 hours minimum - trust me, your kids won't let you rush past those white tigers! Speaking of animals, we got to see some sleepy (but still impressive) pandas in their conservatory. The kids were absolutely mind-blown seeing them up close, even if they were basically giant fluffy couch potatoes at the time.

By 1:30 PM, our stomachs were doing more growling than the lions, so we headed back to Suria mall for lunch. The rest of our day followed the holy trinity of family travel: nap time, pool time, and food time!

Dinner highlight: Hakka Restaurant, just a 10-minute stroll from our hotel. We actually called ahead for a reservation, but on a weekday, we probably didn't need to. The menu's got this amazing mix of Chinese-Malaysian dishes - even our picky eaters found something to love (fried squid and rice for the win!). Meanwhile, mama got to enjoy some seriously good crab curry. πŸ¦€

Day 3: Rainy Day? Aquarium Time! 🐠

Woke up to rain, so aquarium it was! Here's a time-saving tip: while everyone's queuing outside the aquarium, head to the convention center's basement for breakfast and buy your tickets online. Your kids will thank you!

The aquarium's pretty neat - we spent about 90 minutes meeting Nemo, Dory, and their underwater friends. The shark tunnel was definitely the highlight - we were impressed! Fair warning: it can get pretty crowded, but nothing too crazy. Size-wise, it's not as massive as Bangkok or Singapore's aquariums, but it definitely kept our little fish entertained!

After all that underwater adventure, our kids were begging for pool time (because apparently seeing water isn't the same as being in it πŸ™„). We ordered in via Grab app (parent hack: sometimes the best adventures are the ones where you don't have to wrangle kids at a restaurant!).

Evening highlight: FWF Hotpot @ Fahrenheit - honestly, one of our best meals in KL! Spent about 300RM ($65) for all four of us, and the service was amazing. Followed it up with a Christmas decoration hunt at Pavilion mall, because why not?

Day 4: Farm Fun in the City! 🐰

/kuala-lumpur-2024/471738267_975988667771476_3497959922839514545_n.jpg

For our last full day, we chose Farm in the City over Batu Caves. Why? Two words: toddler stairs. Sometimes you gotta know your audience, right? "Farm in the city" was about 30 minutes away but totally worth it!

Quick tip: Bring cash for animal food - there's no ATM on site (learned this one the hard way!).

The kids went absolutely nuts feeding rabbits, petting snakes (brave little souls!), and making friends with turtles. An hour was plenty for our little animal lovers.

After ice creams, we headed back for lunch at Suria Mall's food court. Then the usual afternoon routine: nap, explore, repeat!

The grand finale? The fountain show at Suria (8 PM) and treats at Bacha Coffee. Fair warning: their coffee menu is like a novel - but everything we tried was amazing!
